Who's the More Bankable Leading Man? Bradley Cooper or Matthew McConaughey?

Saeed Adyani/Lionsgate, Dark Fields Productions

Bradley Cooper had a couple of duds in a row. Matthew McConaughey hadn't been on screen in a couple of years.

This box-office weekend, one leading man was back at No. 1.

The other was, well, No. 4.

Cooper moved past Case 39 and The A-Team, and nabbed the top spot with an estimated $19 million for his new pill thriller, Limitless.

McConaughey, meanwhile, got stuck in the standings behind holdovers Rango and Battle: Los Angeles, as his critically well-regarded Lincoln Lawyer, his first new release since 2009's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, stalled in its debut.

Overall, it was another lost weekend for Hollywood. A year ago, Alice in Wonderland was wowing on its way to a blockbuster a billion-dollar worldwide gross; this weekend, Limitless was wowing by making good on its tight budget. (The film only did cost a reported $27 million, so, dollar-wise, its performance was impressive, but still…)

With an estimated price tag of $40 million, Lincoln Lawyer, which opened up with just $13.4 million, couldn't even take comfort in its financials.

Elsewhere, the offbeat alien comedy Paul was somewhat more successful than last weekend's intergalactic entry, Mars Needs Moms, but that's not saying much. After two weekends, the $150 million Mars Needs Moms has "grossed" $23.2 million worldwide.

In limited release, the Paul Giamatti indie comedy Win Win was a star, averaging more than $30,000 at each of its five theaters. (By comparison, Limitless averaged about $7,000.)

Adam Sandler's and Jennifer Aniston's Just Go With It exited the Top 10 after five weekends, and a $98 million take. If it hangs in there like Bedtime Stories and You Don't Mess With the Zohan, both of which dropped out of the Top 10 shy of $100 million, it'll become Sandler's 13th nine-figure-grossing comedy.

The Oscar glow was finally gone from The King's Speech, which fell from the Top 10 after 10 weekends. So far, the little $15 million drama has grossed a huge $339 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.

Here's a complete rundown of the top-grossing films, per Friday-Sunday numbers as compiled by Exhibitor Relations.

  1.     Limitless, $19 million
  2.     Rango, $15.3 million
  3.     Battle: Los Angeles, $14.6 million
  4.     Lincoln Lawyer, $13.4 million
  5.     Paul, $13.2 million
  6.     Red Riding Hood, $7.3 million
  7.     The Adjustment Bureau, $5.9 million
  8.     Mars Needs Moms, $5.3 million
  9.     Beastly, $3.3 million
  10.     Hall Pass, $2.6 million

What Happened With Bradley Cooper And Renee Zellweger?

What Happened With Bradley Cooper And Renee Zellweger?

Us Weekly reports talking to a friend of Renee Zellweger, who recently split from boyfriend Bradley Cooper. So what happened?
“She tried to make it work, but in the end it was too hard,” a Zellweger insider tells Us. “Her friends feel bad it ended, but she’s okay.”
Hmmm… okay. It seems like Renee’s realization was sudden: at a party on February 26 the pair seemed happy, according to onlookers.
“When they were in the VIP section, they were cute with one another,” an eyewitness told UsMagazine.com. “Bradley seemed very attentive with her.”
Flanked by Cooper’s mother, Gloria, Zellweger, 41, “was seated comfortably and drinking green tea” as theLimitless star, 36, mingled with partygoers.
And in January Renee skipped the Golden Globes to be with Bradley and his family after his father died.
Well, sometimes things just don’t work out. It’s probably tougher on both of them that his happened just when Bradley had a new movie come out, which puts them more in the spotlight.

They had a great run, avoiding tabloid pages more than most Hollywood couples, but it's now over Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger. Multiple sources have confirmed their split.

The movie stars met in 2009 and moved in together last fall. No reason has been given for the split, but the pair actually made Star Magazine's cover this week, just a few days before the break-up went public.

Said Cooper in September: "I can't say enough about her. I just love her. I [loved] coming to work. I love acting with her. I can learn so much from her."

Speculation of a split first arose in February, though, when each attended a pre-Oscar party, but didn’t hang out as a couple at all.

Bradley Cooper is a big heartthrob by Hollywood standards, but the actor says he's never approached by the ladies. The Limitless actor says he usually has to do the chasing -- so we gather that he had to corral current girlfriend Renee Zellweger

Asked what women can do to get him attention, Bradley said: "I'm usually trying to catch their attention. Oh Jesus, anything."

While he and Renee, 41, have been dating for around 19 months, Bradley insisted he is in no rush to get married again and says he has no plans to have children anytime soon.
Speaking at the VIP screening of Limitless at London's Apollo West End cinema  last night, the 36-year-old actor told BANG Showbiz: "Oh gosh no, I'm just enjoying my life at the moment."

In Limitless Bradley plays writer Eddie Morra -- who after his girlfriend leaves him, discovers a drug which gives him super-human abilities - and while he loved working with co-stars Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish, he admitted he wished he had more scenes with British actress Anna Friel. He said: "She was lovely. I wish we had more scenes together, as we only had one proper scene. Hopefully I'll catch up with her tonight."
